The New Yorker says their July 08 cover is meant to be “satire”… making fun of all the caricatures of the Obama family that right wing critics have tried to create.
But the Obama and McCain campaigns aren’t laughing, they’re calling the cover “tasteless and offensive.”
ABC’s Tapper has it right: “It’s a recruitment poster for the right-wing.”
For a bunch of “serious thinkers” the folks at The New Yorker showed surprisingly little regard for the fact that every time the mainstream and/or left-leaning media pulls this kind of stunt it pseudo-legitimizes those animals at Fox News and every other right wing filth-peddler out there.
UPDATE: David Remnick, The New Yorker’s editor, holds his ground.

I can’t speak for anyone else’s interpretations, all I can say is that it combines a number of images that have been propagated, not by everyone on the right but by some, about Obama’s supposed “lack of patriotism” or his being “soft on terrorism” or the idiotic notion that somehow Michelle Obama is the second coming of the Weathermen or most violent Black Panthers. That somehow all this is going to come to the Oval Office.”
UPDATE II: Cartoonist Barry Blitt, who created the cover, defends also.
“I think the idea that the Obamas are branded as unpatriotic [let alone as terrorists] in certain sectors is preposterous. It seemed to me that depicting the concept would show it as the fear-mongering ridiculousness that it is.”

this is beyond offensive. and disgusting.
obama’s face is a throwback to little black sambo in this cartoon. this isn’t a satire, this is airing the dirty laundry of the right wing. how disgusting.
satire? SATIRE? a satire would be McCain in a wheelchair in the middle of a scene from jurassic park, IV in arm and prune juice in hand.

I love the Michelle’s Angela Davis style fro. Nothing says angry Black Commie like a puffed up kinky helmet. I think the left-handed terrorist fist jab is secret handshake language for “the White devils ain’t gonna know what hit ‘em in November.”

You have to remember that they are doing this to a humanbeing. It hurts Obama, but more important it hurt his whole family. It hurt Michelle and their little girls. It also hurt Obama’s sister and next to kin. It hurt Michelle’s brother and next to kin.
Just think of this as, what if they was doing this to your family? How would you feel that they are making you out to be a terrorist? Republicans all ready thing that all democrats are terrorist. Remember what Mitt Romney said when he was suspended his campaign that he was doing it because he doesn’t want to help the terrorist.

Bush, Chertoff, and a majority of Congress have already made all of us out to be terrorists. Otherwise, we would still have the 4th Amendment and right to privacy protections that existed before the 2000 putsch. Besides, Obama’s strategists probably green-lighted the cover to give him a sympathy bump in the polls. Media seeding psy-ops of this magnitude are rarely accidental.

I contend that David Remnick’s “mirror to the prejudice and dark imaginnings” is certainly not about Obama’s “past” but is definitely about Barry Blitt’s “fear mongering,” the basis of the “mirror’s reflection” being “subliminal racism” within their “white supremacist” mindset. Their collective “intent” is a masterwork of transmuting propagada, racial mockery, and subjugating “double speak.”
Here is a “source & analog” test … ask Remnick & Blitt if they believe or know for a fact that Phyllis Wheatley, Jupiter Hammon, Nat Turner, David Walker, and the newspaper “Freedom’s Jurnal” ever existed. I have written in my book “Subliminal Racism Essays” that these “historical ciphers” created by racists are the “fear mongering” models before Remnick’s “mirror.”
