Lark already posted about The Rev. Jessie Jackson’s remarks from last night claiming that he wanted to cut Barack Obama’s “nuts off.”
But in case you missed it, here’s a recap: Jackson — believing that Obama is going around the country “talking down” to black people and thinking his mic was off — said he wanted to castrate Obama… then he later apologized for saying it when the story broke… Obama accepted the apology… and everyone merrily went on their way.
Only now CNN updates us that what Jackson really meant to say is that Barack Obama “was cutting off his [own nuts] with black people and [the] black church”; meaning, Obama needs no help from Jackson, he’s self-castrating just fine.
Meaningful Distraction says: Keep talking, Jesse!
Ooh, any chance you can get Al Sharpton and (hope against hope!) Louis Farrakhan to join you for a group press conference, and together you can all talk about what you’d like to do to Obama’s testicles?
The politics of this are pretty simple: Jackson’s outburst is manna from Heaven for Obama. This stuff won’t keep black voters home in November — most recognize it as jealousy and resentment over (1) the changing of the guard and (2) the fact that Obama is a departure from the way black leaders before him often approached public service.
It’s not a new “problem” Obama’s facing either. A LOT of black politicians held back their support (or gave it to Hillary Clinton) out of frustration that, in their view, Obama didn’t do enough to publicly honor the contributions they made to American politics. In short, they called him “ungrateful.” Some still do.
This is a debatable point, but Jackson’s latest outburst is just another example of the older guard’s hurt feelings that Obama came from no where and changed the way a country could view a black political figure.
But make no mistake: the GOP would love nothing more than to paint a picture that Obama’s real running mates this year are Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Louis Farrakhan …the scary black men.
Obama doesn’t belong to that group, nor do his politics align with theirs, but the surest way to see Obama lose is to convince white voters that in Obama they’re really getting one (or some combination) of those three.
Plus, as Bloomberg points out, Jackson’s comments may emphasize Obama’s “call for personal responsibility, a favorite topic of Republicans.”
Obama’s not talking down to people. He goes around and says, “Any fool can have a child. That doesn’t make you a father,” or “Too many fathers are AWOL, missing from too many lives and too many homes.”
These are truisms and things that all people — not just blacks — need to hear. And it’s nice to see a politician, who is himself a devoted husband and father, speaking about issues like this.
