Hours ago, while unleashing his most blistering attacks of this campaign, John McCain dropped the “c-word” when speaking about Barack Obama and the economy, in a move that is sure to create a political firestorm and prompt a great deal of backtracking by the presumptive Republican nominee.
During what appear to be prepared remarks for a town hall event in Denver, John McCain said the following:
A vote for Barack Obama is essentially a vote to take away American’s CROCS!!!

HO-LY SHIT! There are some lines in politics you just assume people won’t cross.
After hitting Obama on the issue of “protectionism,” McCain explained:
“Five years ago, the outdoor footwear company, Crocs, was started by a couple of entrepreneurs with a great idea, ingenuity and drive,” McCain said. “This former small business now employs 600 people in Colorado alone, and sells over 50 percent of its products in 90 countries around the world. Building barriers to Crocs or any American company’s access to foreign markets will have a devastating effect on our economy and jobs, and the prosperity of American families.”
Meaningful Distraction likes to have a little fun with John McCain’s campaign from time to time…but all kidding aside, McCain really hit below the belt with this one.
Look for the Obama campaign to respond (something to the effect of):
“I was very disappointed to hear the remarks of John McCain from earlier today. I find those types of comments regrettable and divisive, and feel they have no place in our politics. I think anybody who understands the history of this country knows they are patently absurd.
I’m from the South Side of Chicago where people love their Crocs, so let me be perfectly clear about this: I will not take away America’s Crocs. I was raised by my white grandmother who loves her Crocs, and my two young daughters, Sasha and Malia, wear them around in our community. Going forward, I would expect that the same way those comments don’t have a place in my campaign they shouldn’t have a place in John McCain’s either.”
And you know what, Obama would be absolutely right.
