These days nobody pays attention to the daily polls that come out with new numbers for Barack Obama & John McCain. With the exception of that Freak over at Gallup, pretty much every other pollster on earth recognizes that McCain should just drop out now and endorse Obama.
Therefore, from this point on, the only polls that Meaningful Distraction will be looking at are those pitting Michelle Obama against Cindy McCain — because that, in our opinion, is where the real bloodsport is going to be.
Today an AP-Yahoo News poll was released that bore gifts for the Beer Heiress and bad news for Our Lady of Hope.
Cindy McCain: 27 % view her favorably vs. 17 % who view her unfavorably
Michelle Obama: 30 % view her favorably vs. 35 % who view her unfavorably
For our numerically challenged readers, or anyone who’s unfamiliar with the favorable / unfavorable index, this basically means that: while Michelle is better known, Cindy McCain has more people that like her vs. dislike her, while the opposite holds true for Michelle.
We have our theories as to why this is, but for now we’re trying to go behind the numbers to find out whether:
(a) Americans just like rich people better
(b) The only thing Americans fear more than fear itself is a strong woman, or
(c) there’s a groundswell of anticipation out there right now — flying completely below the national radar — that a John McCain victory in 2008 will usher in a new era where traditional gender roles get flipped and women pay for everything.
We’re open to your thoughts on the matter.
