The above ad ran in Britain with the tag line “Give your BLT a little NYC” and, as the Guardian reports, the concept is, “the product tastes so good ‘It’s as if you have your own New York deli man in your kitchen.’”
The company has now pulled the ad after receiving a paltry 200 complaints to the British Advertising Standards Authority stating that it was “offensive” and “inappropriate to see two men kissing”. People also claimed that it was raising difficult questions from children (although the Madonna-Britney kiss was fine).
I can understand where they are coming from, but I also don’t see the need to pull the ad. The men are not full-on tongue kissing, it’s not graphic in any way, and you can explain it to children as simply as the Heinz people did with the whole bit about having a NY deli man in your kitchen.
Sure he might be a gay deli man, but you don’t really have to get into that. Mayonnaise equality for all.
